A campaign targeting aggressive drivers in the Willamette Valley snagged 38 in a two-day effort that ended today.

Officers from the Oregon State Police, Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Salem Police Department worked together. Police rode in commercial trucks along Interstate 5, looking for drivers speeding, tailgating and changing lanes unsafely.

The Ticket Aggressive Cars and Trucks campaign, known as TACT, aims to reduce truck crashes through education and enforcement. It’s a partnership involving the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Motor Carrier Division and the trucking industry as well as law enforcement.

More than a third of the citations were issued for speeding, including one for a motorist clocked at 103 mph in a 65-mph zone Tuesday night. Nine went to drivers who followed too closely, six to drivers who improperly changed lanes and five for seat belt violations. Another 21 drove off with warnings, said state police Lt. Mark Cotter.

In the past decade, 3 out of 4 people killed in highway collisions were riding in cars. Organizers hope the campaign reminds car drivers to leave more space when driving near a truck — one car length for every 10 miles per hour of speed.

“Research shows that most truck vs. car crashes could be avoided if drivers knew how to steer clear of unsafe situations,” said David McKane, manager of ODOT’s motor carrier safety and federal programs.

“With this campaign, we hope to increase awareness, encourage safer driving practices and make a positive change in the risky driving behaviors of motorists — all of which will lead to fewer crashes, fatalities and injuries on Oregon’s roadways.

Nearly 2,000 brought to safety in Texas after Ike

Monday, September 15th, 2008

It would have been a lot easier for the rescuers and people had evacuated when they were told to.

Rescuers said they had saved nearly 2,000 people from waterlogged streets and splintered houses by Sunday afternoon. Many had ignored evacuation orders and tried to ride out the storm.

Michael Geml has braved other storms in his bayfront neighborhood in Galveston, where he’s lived for 25 years, though none quite like Ike. The 51-year-old stayed in the third-story Jacuzzi of a neighbor’s house, directly on the bay, with family pets as waves crashed across the landscape. But amid the havoc, Geml asked anyone who would listen — even his rescuers — for an odd commodity: cat litter for his spooked feline.

“I’ll never stay again,” Geml said. “I don’t care what the weatherman says — a Category 1, a Category 2. I thought I was going to die.”

This is America and you have every right to stay in your home if you want. However, if it is a mandatory evacuation and you refuse to leave, then the rescuers should not have to come get you.  I know that sounds harsh, but it’s the only thing that makes sense.  Of course, we will never do this because we are too compassionate to leave stupid people to die.

This is just crazy…she is almost half his age…

Even though Hulk Hogan confessed to an extramarital affair earlier this year, his daughter Brooke Hogan      claims the former pro-wrestler has never been one to sleep around.

“My dad is really into his new girlfriend Jennifer — she is awesome,” Brooke told Pop Tarts. “Things are pretty serious between them — my father isn’t the type to jump around from girl to girl. He’s always been a very monogamous creature.”

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 7, 2008—

Just a few weeks ago Jim Eble lived in his dream home in Las Vegas. It now sits empty because he owed the bank more money than the house was worth and the bank was threatening foreclosure.

“It’s tough to come back here now,” said Eble, looking at his dream house.

But Eble has found an answer to his financial problem: buying a new home. Although it’s hard to imagine with one house near foreclosure, his solution is to buy a second house at a bargain price and simply walk away from the old house.

The Politics of Hurricanes

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Posted by Tim….

After Hurricane Katrina and in our 24/7 media world, natural disasters have become the equivalent of national car wrecks, as millions of rubberneckers tune into cable to assess the material and political damage. That’s especially true with Hurricane Gustav, as the media prepared a story line that this might be “another Katrina” that could doom John McCain’s convention and maybe his Presidential prospects.

Mexican brewery taps name of crime legend

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

GUADALAJARA, Mexico - A new beer named after the “patron saint” of drug traffickers is brewing up controversy in Mexico, where the government is locked in a bloody battle against drug gangs.

Malverde Beer is named after Jesús Malverde, a Robin Hood-style figure who is revered by drug smugglers in the western Mexico state of Sinaloa. It debuted in April and has been spreading to bars around western Mexico. The brewer plans to sell it in the United States, too.
