Children exposed to pesticide in womb twice as likely to be overweight, refuting idea of sole personal responsibility. Geoffrey Lean reports
Sunday, 7 September 2008
Pollution can make children fat, startling new research shows. A groundbreaking Spanish study indicates that exposure to a range of common chemicals before birth sets up a baby to grow up stout, thus helping to drive the worldwide obesity epidemic.
The results of the study, just published – the first to link chemical contamination in the womb with one of the developing world’s greatest and fastest-growing health crises – carry huge potential implications for public policy around the globe. They undermine recent strictures from the Conservative leader, David Cameron, that blame solely the obese for their own condition.
But behind the fence, the blue agave plants, the raw ingredient of Mexico’s famous tequila, are getting harder to spot. They are being replaced by row after row of leafy cornstalks.

And the movement to convert San Diego schools to solar power has stalled — because it has led to a huge increase in energy costs. The San Diego Union Tribune reports electric bills went up $20,000 a year after solar energy systems were installed in 28 schools. So a plan to put solar in a total of 50 schools has run out of steam.
The administrator who runs the solar project for the Lemon Grove district says schools went solar not just to save money but to provide a lesson in planetary stewardship.
But one school board member says the unanticipated costs have taken money away from the classroom and put it into the hands of the utility companies.
…Wait a second. I thought the Goreacle told us going green would SAVE us money. Sure, it might be more expensive at first, but then…Well, the schools spent a ton of money to put the solar stuff in and now they’re paying MORE money for their energy. Great plan!
Federal officials estimate there is as much as 4.3 billion barrels of recoverable oil in the Bakken formation in western North Dakota and eastern Montana…Some of the oil people are estimating there may be as much as THREE HUNDRED BILLION barrels of oil there. That’s more than in the Middle East. Wow.
Credit the public with sense. Earth Hour, hysterically promoted by The Age, the Sydney Morning Herald, the ABC, SBS, Sky News and the federal and state governments, resulted in no significant fall in power usage…
You need to check this out via Hot Air. This whole idea is such a joke. The best thing to do is work at creating alternative energies that don’t pollute. But that doesn’t mean stop using energy until we can. By the way, we need to reduce real pollution, not what we breathe out, CO2.
